MS Office 2010 in the Cloud

Monday, May 17th, 2010

Although this is not new news it’s still something to keep on our minds. The beta version o fMS Office that’s hosted in the cloud has seen over 1.3 mn downloads; over 2,000 firms in India are moving to the latest version. Last September, research firm IDC had cautioned that while Microsoft Office still held the lion’s share of the market for office productivity suites, Google was rapidly gaining ground. The survey indicated that 19.5 per cent of the respondents were in organisations that used Google Docs in some form, up from 5.8 per cent a year earlier.

“The response to Office 2010 suite (which includes Web Apps) in India has been excellent,” said Rajan Anandan, managing director, Microsoft India. He adds that Web Apps can easily match the online offerings of competing players, primarily online search giant Google.

“Over the last 12 months, our strategy has been to sharpen focus on cloud services. Office 2010 was a logical conclusion,” said Anandan. Microsoft, he added, offers cloud services across three layers in India. The first is “Software as a service”, or SaaS, which includes Microsoft Online Services with over 600 commercial customers in India and over 10,000 seats. Its partners include HCL Technologies, Infosys Technologies and Wipro Infotech. They provide the value-added services. Microsoft’s hosted ERP partners include RoboSoft and Net4India.

Citrix Making it easy to sell Cloud Hosting Services

Monday, May 17th, 2010

Citrix released new tools this week to help cloud hosting providers sell business-oriented cloud services such as DR and compliance to IT shops. With the battle between Citrix cloud hosting, this will stir up emotions between VMware and open-source Xen for the cloud hosting market.

Rackspace, said his company was moving off Xen and over to XenServer for better support. Rackspace is the second largest cloud provider after Amazon Web Services. AWS still runs on Xen.  What will this mean for VMware?

“Some people like Ford, some people like Chevy,” said Nathan Day, CTO of hosting company SoftLayer. “When companies move from internal to external services they want to stay with a common solution.” “To be competitive it needs to offer virtual servers at a lower cost than the VMware license allows,” said an attendee who preferred not to be named. Until now Terremark was the poster child for VMware vCloud services, and even took $20 million in funding from VMware to help build out its infrastructure. News that it’s offering a compliance service based on Citrix must smart if you’re one of the investors over at VMware.

Adobe Digital Signatures in the Cloud

Friday, May 14th, 2010

Today, Adobe unveils the public beta version of the long awaited eSignatures, a cloud-based service that lets you easily add your Signature to any document online.  This is a free service that Adobe gives clients. It’s very simple, all you do is Upload your document, insert the recipient’s e-mail, select a date, insert a message and then sign.

According to an Adobe source, eSignatures may eventually be integrated into the Acrobat.com service since they share many of the same underlying technologies (an integration with Acrobat.com may also open up monetization opportunities).
