Eucalyptus Raises $20 Million for Its Hybrid Cloud

Eucalyptus Systems, a start-up offering open source tools to give companies the benefits of cloud computing on their own infrastructure, announced that it has raised $20 million in a second round of financing.

The company uses technology developed by the University of California, Santa Barbara. With Eucalyptus, companies can run applications in an internal environment using cloud technology while avoiding the normal concerns of security and being locked into another company’s platform. Those internal environments can also be connected to public environments like Amazon.com’s, creating a “hybrid cloud.” Read More »

Apple Set To Move To The Cloud

Apple is reportedly set to move to cloud computing in order to expand its media content offerings.  Apple cloud computing technology is geared towards enabling its customers to stream media content while on the go, it has been reported.

Citing sources close to the heart of the technology giant, the website Boy Genius has revealed that the firm is looking to offer a cloud-based version of its popular iTunes application. The site expanded: “Any apps you buy, for instance, on your iPhone will immediately sync to your computer.  “Changes to your calendar, or notes of contacts, will also automatically update on your computer as well.”

University of Missouri Cloud Hosting

The University of Missouri (UM) is partnering with IBM to develop a regional-level genomics cloud computing environment that the organizations claim will allow genomics informatics to be shared across a broad range of fields by researchers, academic organizations, and clinical sites throughout the Midwest.

The UM-IBM project will exploit the latter’s computing technologies in an initiative that, as the first of its kind, will have far-reaching benefits for genomics researchers and clinicians at the sharp end of patient welfare, the organizations suggest.
