Cloud Computing Best Practices

Monday, September 20th, 2010

Gary Tyreman, CEO, Univa,  Billy Cox, director of Cloud Strategy & Planning, Software Solutions Group, Intel and Scott Clark, CEO, Deopli Corporation will all be speaking at the executive roundtable discussion and reception on September 29 in Atlanta, GA to present insights and best practices for public, private and hybrid cloud solutions.

The fourth in a series of similar events hosted by Univa and Intel, this roundtable is the first of its kind in the southeast. Titled “Cloud Computing: Realities and Recommendations,” the event takes place at the Microsoft Technology Center in Alpharetta, Georgia on Wednesday, September 29, 2010 from 3:00pm — 5:00pm ET, with a cocktail reception to follow.

“These events have been popular because we’re giving the audience a view of cloud computing from the real world,” said Univa’s Gary Tyreman. “At the moment there are plenty of venues where general cloud information is being presented, but precious few where actual implementation details are shared. By discussing lessons learned based on actual customer projects, we’re giving our attendees the information they need to begin building a cloud computing strategy based on their specific needs and requirements.”

“Taking the concept of cloud and applying it to technology is best done by leveraging experience from teams working with IT providers and end users in the field,” said Intel’s Billy Cox. “These sessions apply that experience and provide a recipe for success.”

“We have spent the last 20 years building private clouds for use by individual companies,” said Clark of Deopli Corporation. “As natural evolution takes us into multi-tenant clouds, we need to make sure we carry forward all the lessons from our past that apply, while recognizing that this is a different beast and will have requirements we have not faced before. These roundtables give us an opportunity to share our experiences and hear new requirements, and then take the best of both to build a more appropriate solution for all to use.”

The event is limited to 25 seats. To reserve a seat or learn more, visit http://univaud.com/about/news/cloud-roundtable-4.php.

iomart Cloud Hosting

Monday, September 20th, 2010

iomart Group plc  has continued to generate strong organic growth where it is currently adding 30 – 40 contracts per month from both new and existing customers.  These include several large and complex contracts, reflecting the continuing trend among mid size corporates to outsource all or part of their IT services to the cloud. Seven of the contracts won each had a total contract value in excess of 100,000 and collectively had a value of over 2.5 million.

New customers won include UK travel agent Flight Centre, leading TV production company, Shine TV (producers of hit series such as Masterchef, Merlin and Got To Dance) and software distributor Softcat a leading provider of software licensing, hardware, security and related IT services to corporate and public sector organisations. For both Flightcentre and Shine TV, iomart Hosting is providing the customer’s critical front end web presence on a managed basis.

In the case of Softcat, iomart Hosting is providing a complex hosting environment to support Softcat’s blue chip clients.

Angus MacSween, CEO of iomart said “We are delighted to be announcing these contract wins which validate our strategy of focusing on delivering services from within every layer of the cloud based hosting model, from the core infrastructure service layer to the complex application hosting layer.  We are witnessing an accelerated adoption of cloud computing and cloud services among enterprises and the size and scale of deployments is also growing. Businesses are thinking far more strategically about cloud services and the benefits that they will bring to their IT operations over the next few years.  We are very well placed to take advantage of this fast growing market and fully intend to capitalise on our innovation, proven capabilities and growing reputation in this fast growing and exciting market.”

With all these new contracts for iomart the should see expanding growth in the cloud hosting sector.  iomart cloud hosting is right around the corner and will be on the rise starting right now!

Cloud Disaster Recovery

Friday, September 17th, 2010

CommVault’s new Cloud DR is offering businesses an economical method to perform full or partial recoveries of Linux and Windows archives and backup data stored on Rackspace Cloud Servers, according to CommVault.  “CommVault is redefining mid-market disaster recovery by offering a fully integrated Cloud DR solution, which reduces the financial challenges associated with traditional DR services that provide affordable and rapid recovery of backup and archive data residing in the cloud,” said Jeff Echols, senior director of cloud strategy and alliances at CommVault.

This flexible solution leverages the integration between CommVault’s enterprise cloud computing-optimized Simpana software and Rackspace’s cloud hosting services. Using CommVault’s integrated cloud storage connector for Simpana, joint customers can use CommVault’s single console to move on-premises backup and archive data to Rackspace Cloud Files, which provide online storage for files and media, according to CommVault. This allows customers to cut internal IT costs by moving archived or infrequently used files and email off their tier-one storage solutions, the company said.

Seems like the new CommVault Cloud DR could be very useful to all of us with cloud hosting websites.  I do think it a bad idea however that they have nothing up on their website that talks about this or has any pricing. No links, no nothing about Cloud DR. If you Google “Cloud DR” you will find nothing but news articles.  CommVault needs to step it up and release a product and have it available for pickup on their website. #fail
