The Planet New Server Cloud Rockin It
Wednesday, June 30th, 2010Build Your Own Cloud
Monday, June 28th, 2010Softlayer’s launched a“Build Your Own Cloud” (BYOC) platform, a new addition to its CloudLayer family of cloud services, which lets customers create customized cloud servers to gain greater application performance, cost efficiency, and availability. Customers can also choose to pay on an on-demand or monthly basis.
“Build Your Own Cloud exemplifies our vision for giving customers control over every aspect of their computing environment,” SoftLayer chief technology officer Nathan Day said in a statement. “We are leading the industry with this level of customization for cloud computing. It brings to market the advantages of a cloud server with the opportunity to tailor system architecture and design like you would a dedicated server.”
The BYOC platform lets users customize CPU, RAM, and storage configurations. There are no fixed resource packages, BYOC increases flexibility for scaling or modifying solutions, and provides simple, easy-to-use ordering through the Web or via a client portal.
It will let you configure 1 to 16 CPU cores and 1 to 16 GB of RAM. The starting price for a base configuration is $0.10 per hour or $70 per month. Monthly plans include 2,000 GB of bandwidth. SoftLayer provides an online price calculator to quickly determine on-demand and monthly rates for any given configuration.
Tilera to Double Processor Cores Every Two Years
Thursday, June 24th, 2010Well DUH. Don’t we double what we can do in the computing world every two years anyways? Tilera’s TILEPro64(TM) processor was selected by Quanta Computer Inc. to create the world’s best performance-per-watt cloud server, packing 512 cores in a 2U server under 400 watts. Next year, Tilera will bring to market the TILE-Gx family with 100 cores in 40 nm process technology, and in 2013, Tilera will offer its 200-core processor, codenamed Stratton, in 28 nm. These products will enable customers to provide 20,000 cores per-rack in 2011 and 40,000 cores per-rack by 2013.
“Providing multiples of performance density and power efficiency in a standard environment is a significant breakthrough that will take cloud computing to the next level,” said Mark J. Barrenechea, SGI CEO. “SGI has been a pioneer in disruptive datacenters technologies. We are working with Tilera to bring this compelling technology to our customers across HPC, cloud, and government market segments.”
“Yesterday’s solutions of bigger and higher frequency cores have become today’s power and density problems. Tilera is providing the new thinking that solves these fundamental issues and allows cloud computing to grow unbounded,” said Omid Tahernia, President and CEO, Tilera Corporation. “Tilera’s technology integrates hundreds of general purpose cores on the same chip, with cache coherence, virtualization, and high speed I/O. Our products are providing breakthrough density today and we will double that with every generation.”
Tilera will be demonstrating its newly-announced S2Q server, developed by Quanta Computer Inc., on June 22-24 at Velocity 2010 in Santa Clara, Calif., and on June 23-24 at Structure 2010 in San Francisco.
