Cloud Computing Best Practices

Monday, September 20th, 2010

Gary Tyreman, CEO, Univa,  Billy Cox, director of Cloud Strategy & Planning, Software Solutions Group, Intel and Scott Clark, CEO, Deopli Corporation will all be speaking at the executive roundtable discussion and reception on September 29 in Atlanta, GA to present insights and best practices for public, private and hybrid cloud solutions.

The fourth in a series of similar events hosted by Univa and Intel, this roundtable is the first of its kind in the southeast. Titled “Cloud Computing: Realities and Recommendations,” the event takes place at the Microsoft Technology Center in Alpharetta, Georgia on Wednesday, September 29, 2010 from 3:00pm — 5:00pm ET, with a cocktail reception to follow.

“These events have been popular because we’re giving the audience a view of cloud computing from the real world,” said Univa’s Gary Tyreman. “At the moment there are plenty of venues where general cloud information is being presented, but precious few where actual implementation details are shared. By discussing lessons learned based on actual customer projects, we’re giving our attendees the information they need to begin building a cloud computing strategy based on their specific needs and requirements.”

“Taking the concept of cloud and applying it to technology is best done by leveraging experience from teams working with IT providers and end users in the field,” said Intel’s Billy Cox. “These sessions apply that experience and provide a recipe for success.”

“We have spent the last 20 years building private clouds for use by individual companies,” said Clark of Deopli Corporation. “As natural evolution takes us into multi-tenant clouds, we need to make sure we carry forward all the lessons from our past that apply, while recognizing that this is a different beast and will have requirements we have not faced before. These roundtables give us an opportunity to share our experiences and hear new requirements, and then take the best of both to build a more appropriate solution for all to use.”

The event is limited to 25 seats. To reserve a seat or learn more, visit http://univaud.com/about/news/cloud-roundtable-4.php.

Novell Cloud Management

Monday, September 13th, 2010

Novell today announced the availability of Novell Cloud Manager, a new solution that enables customers to create and securely manage a cloud computing environment as a seamless extension of existing data center resources.  The new Novell Cloud Manager is designed for the heterogeneous reality of most IT environments, giving users the freedom and flexibility to create and manage private clouds which support all leading hypervisors, operating systems and hardware platforms.

Novell Cloud Manager lets IT administrators package, price and present IT services on-demand through a customizable interface. Customers can leverage the flexibility and cost savings of cloud computing, without the security and compliance risks inherent in public clouds.

Novell that was conducted by Harris Interactive and sponsored by Novell showed that 89 percent of respondents see private clouds as the next logical stop for organizations already using virtualization and 93 percent feel private cloud platforms should offer a management framework that can span a heterogeneous infrastructure. In addition, 91 percent of survey respondents note concern about the inherent security risks public clouds present.

“Novell Cloud Manager will simplify our IT service provisioning by enabling us to treat our physical resources and virtual infrastructure as a seamless private cloud and gain a much clearer and more granular understanding of our IT use and costs,” said Ryan Klose, chief information officer of Premium Wine Brands for Pernod Ricard. “Working with AkurIT, our Novell business partner, who implemented the virtual infrastructure and Novell Cloud Manager, our BIS Infrastructure team can be more responsive to changing business priorities. Novell Cloud Manager allows us to simplify and automate many of our business processes, accelerate IT service delivery as well as provide visibility and cost transparency to the business. Strategically, this will provide us with a competitive edge.”

Miss Universe 2010

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

Congratulations to Miss Mexico Jimena Navarrete for winning the 2010 Miss Universe Contest.  In the picture below she celebrates with runner-up Miss Jamaica Yendi Phillips as she is crowned Miss Universe 2010 at the Miss Universe 2010 Pageant Final at the Mandalay Bay Hotel in Las Vegas on Aug. 23, 2010.

It was a great show and I loved watching some of the blunders like when Miss Philippines’ answer when asked what her biggest mistake in life was and how she fixed it. “In my 22 years of existence, I can say there is nothing major,” Venus Raj said. I thought it was funny because before the pageant, Raj was rated among the top contestants in an online poll on the pageant’s website.

How does Miss Universe 2010 have to do with the cloud hosting world and cloud servers?  How many people logged in to ABC and watched the pageant online?  According to random websites out there, there were 6 million viewers.  Those are all people watching online.  How much bandwidth is that to stream to all these people?  How many servers would it take to stream the same thing to 6 million people?  Do they have to keep those dedicated servers all year long for this one event?

With cloud servers you really don’t have to worry about that.  You can with the flip of a button up your server to be something that can handle this amount of traffic. Cloud servers are scalable and can have infinite flexiblity.  I highly recommend cloud servers for companies that have spurts of traffic.  Actually, I take that back… I think everyone should have cloud servers!
