ERDAS APOLLO On The Cloud

ERDAS announced the release of ERDAS APOLLO on the Cloud, a new cloud-based data management and delivery solution. ERDAS APOLLO on the Cloud provides a simple entry point into the geospatial server world.

The new ERDAS cloud management solution will be available  immediately to customers in the US.  This solution is ideal for a GIS users that want a quick server implementation with elasticity. BMC Software Shifts To The Cloud

BMC Software Inc. now it is riding one of the technology industry’s biggest technologies: cloud computing.  Over the past 18 months, BMC has helped clients build and manage more than 150 cloud-based data centers. The company’s customers include Concur Technologies Inc. and Rackspace Hosting Inc.

BMC also has introduced several new cloud products. The BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management, a software for building and operating cloud-based data centers is one of their top cloud server products. The Houston-based company also plans to introduce a lot more cloud-related IT products.  “The cloud has been remarkable for us,” BMC Chief Executive Bob Beauchamp told Dow Jones Newswires in an interview. “In the last nine months or so it has really taken off.”

BMC’s revenue from cloud computing is roughly 3.5% of revenue since the company entered the field, it still knows there is room for significant growth with cloud computing. Global cloud services revenue is expected to grow 16.6 % to $68.3 billion this year and more than double to $148.8 billion by 2014, according to market watcher Gartner Inc.

“Success in cloud computing will mean the difference between existing or not existing within a few years,” said Glenn O’Donnell, a Forrester Research Inc. analyst. “The new battleground is around the cloud.”

Amazon Cloud Sees Opportunity in Genomic Data Overload

The Amazon model, which customers rent server space on a pay-as-you-go basis, and get access to their data anytime via the Internet. It’s supposed to allow small businesses, governments, and anybody else to save cash and hassles by not having to buy and maintain their own in-house servers. The model is credited with enabling a new generation of lean tech startups to build businesses using far less capital.

Computing challenges have become a “serious blocker” to people trying to make sense of the genomic wave, Singh says. And Amazon has made it a high priority over the past couple years to become the company that stores genomic data in a cheaper and more accessible way for researchers. Customers, Singh says, “have started looking at the cloud very seriously as a possible option. Over the last year or so, that curiosity has turned into serious adoption.”
