Microsoft’s Office 365 vs Google Docs War

Monday, June 27th, 2011

Both Microsoft and Google are boasting about large customers they’ve won. Last week, Google said that McClatchy, which owns The Sacramento Bee and other newspapers, is switching 8,500 workers to Google Apps. Microsoft held news conferences with San Francisco and New York officials when those cities chose Microsoft reports the Seattle Times.

While word processing on the Web may seem mundane, the competition between Google and Microsoft over Web-based applications is the stuff of high drama. Google protested in federal court when a U.S. cabinet department favored Microsoft. Steve Ballmer has personally visited department officials to court its business. Google’s marketing slogan is that companies have “gone Google.” Microsoft’s retort, “Google gone.”

The competition is hot because email services on Google Apps and Office 365 are a gateway to cloud computing. Instead of getting installed on desktop PCs or corporate servers, software and data in cloud computing will be stored on servers run by a cloud company and accessed via the Internet with smartphones, tablets, laptops, PCs and televisions.

The cloud hosting world for apps is becoming a huge factor in who will be leading the global market for these types of things.  I wonder who will win.  Who do you think controls the global app market for cloud computing?  I’m talking specifically about companies that host the apps in the cloud.

Over the past couple years we have heard that the cloud is the future of productivity and savings for everyone.  Today, Google is launching a brand new plugin for Microsoft Office called Cloud Connect.  Cloud Connect will tie Google Docs directly into the ubiquitous productivity suite, free of charge.

Editing a document in Word? It’ll automatically sync to your Google Docs account each time you hit ‘Save’. Want to share a preview of your document without worrying about what file format your coworkers can open? Just send them a link to the Google Docs file. The plugin supports Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel, and it’s a big deal for Google’s strategy with Docs. The new product is going live for Apps for Business customers today as part of a preview program (sign up here); everyone else will get it soon.

MS Office 2010 in the Cloud

Monday, May 17th, 2010

Although this is not new news it’s still something to keep on our minds. The beta version o fMS Office that’s hosted in the cloud has seen over 1.3 mn downloads; over 2,000 firms in India are moving to the latest version. Last September, research firm IDC had cautioned that while Microsoft Office still held the lion’s share of the market for office productivity suites, Google was rapidly gaining ground. The survey indicated that 19.5 per cent of the respondents were in organisations that used Google Docs in some form, up from 5.8 per cent a year earlier.

“The response to Office 2010 suite (which includes Web Apps) in India has been excellent,” said Rajan Anandan, managing director, Microsoft India. He adds that Web Apps can easily match the online offerings of competing players, primarily online search giant Google.

“Over the last 12 months, our strategy has been to sharpen focus on cloud services. Office 2010 was a logical conclusion,” said Anandan. Microsoft, he added, offers cloud services across three layers in India. The first is “Software as a service”, or SaaS, which includes Microsoft Online Services with over 600 commercial customers in India and over 10,000 seats. Its partners include HCL Technologies, Infosys Technologies and Wipro Infotech. They provide the value-added services. Microsoft’s hosted ERP partners include RoboSoft and Net4India.
